Families of September 11 asks its members to complete a brief survey that should take no more than five minutes. Answers to this survey will help us understand the types of programs and materials that are of interest to you. Additionally, there is a space for general comments at the end of the survey where you are invited to share your thoughts on other issues not addressed in the survey. Your participation is important so that we can be certain our priorities as we move forward reflect those of our membership. In light of recent events in the Gulf Coast, FOS11 would like to update you on a few of the activities of its Board. FOS11 Advisory Board member Dr. Donna Gaffney was recently deployed to assist in the reopening of a hospital in the Lake Charles community affected by Hurricane Rita. In addition, as Director of the School Preparedness and Planning Program within the National Center for Disaster Preparedness at Columbia University's Mailman School of Public Health, FOS11 Board member Gregory Thomas has been in the field assessing the needs of evacuees, especially children, in Houston.
Career Breakthroughs is a career coaching program designed to serve individuals in the New York City Metropolitan Area, as well as individuals in Boston, Washington D.C, Shanksville, PA, or other U.S. regions as needed. The program serves 9/11-impacted individuals who are unemployed, severely underemployed, unable to sustain ongoing success in the workplace, or seeking to make a volunteer contribution to society. The program is led by Gene Gitelson, a former Vice President of the Chase Manhattan Bank and the former Managing Director of Lee Hecht Harrison, now the largest career services firm in the world. The World Trade Center Memorial Foundation recently announced that it is has raised more than $101 million to fund the World Trade Center Memorial. The monies raised came from private donors; foundations; corporations; and contributions from individuals, schools, and businesses from 38 states and seven countries. The Memorial Foundation's goal is to raise $500 million to build the memorial, "Reflecting Absence," by architect Michael Arad and landscape architect Peter Walker, which is scheduled to open in 2009. The Memorial Foundation will continue to solicit gifts from large corporations and individual donors while also seeking public donations. On Thursday, October 20, the 9/11 Public Discourse Project released a report assessing implementation of the 9/11 Commission's recommendations on reforming the institutions of government, in the executive branch, and the Congress. This is the second of several reports formally assessing the implementation of 9/11 Commission recommendations. It is available at www.9-11pdp.org, along with the first report on Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness and Response. The 9/11 Public Discourse Project will release a third report on Monday, November 14, at 10:30AM at the Oceanic Room at the Ronald Reagan Building, Washington, DC.

Iron Skillet Cook Off -- Monday, November 7, 2005, 6:00-10:00PM
The Fourth Annual Iron Skillet Cook Off is an exclusive September Space, World Cares Center INC. fundraising event where NYC firefighters (one from each borough) compete against top restaurant chefs. A Flight Plan for Life -- Sunday, November 13, 1:30-4:00PM
Tuesday's Children in partnership with Afterburner Seminars presents "A Flight Plan for Life," a program for 10-18 year olds and their parents. Top military fighter pilots will inspire students to set goals, plan their life and careers, and avoid the distractions and pitfalls that can derail them. New York Disaster Counseling Coalition
NYDCC serves the mental health needs of all members of the uniformed services with outreach, educational programs, crisis and long term counseling. Importantly, because first responders are sustained by a family network, NYDCC supports first responder families, in addition to the responders themselves. NYDCC's Referral Program provides access to free, confidential counseling services by licensed clinicians throughout the tri-state area, including, but not limited to, treatment for individuals, couples, families, support groups, psychiatric evaluations, and residential drug and alcohol treatment. NYDCC organizes support groups, workshops, conferences, seminars and weekend getaways with the purpose of promoting resilience and enhancing the quality of life for law enforcement officers, first responders and their families. Volunteers Needed for Research Project About Trauma and 9/11
You are invited to participate in an anonymous study about trauma, and how it may affect people differently. This study will explore issues of child abuse and how they may impact a person's reactions to trauma later in life, such as the terrorist attack on September 11. The study is to be conducted by Kevin O'Brien, MSW, a graduate student at New York University's School of Social Work as part of the requirement for completion of his doctoral degree. The requirements for participation in this study are: a) that you are 18 years of age, and b) that you were in Manhattan on September 11, 2001. Participation in this study is voluntary and you may withdraw at anytime. Participation consists of completing a five (5)-part questionnaire that will take approximately 30 minutes to complete. There will be the option to complete this questionnaire online or in person. There will be no payment (remuneration) for your time or participation. Responses will be compiled together, and without any identifying information. Red Cross Urges Family Members to Claim Estate Gift Before Year's End
Through the generosity of the public, the American Red Cross has awarded a $55,000 payment to the estates of 2,869 people (as of 9/30/05) who lost their lives in the terrorist attacks on America, or who still are missing four years later. The estates of nearly 100 decedents still have not claimed this payment. If you are the executor or administrator of an estate for a 9/11 victim, and you have not applied for the Estate Gift (also called the Supplemental Gift), the Red Cross is urging that you call 877-746-4987 to request an application. Like other Red Cross financial assistance programs for individuals directly affected by 9/11, this gift will not be available after December 30, 2005. Estates will, however, be given additional time to provide the documentation necessary to claim the Estate Gift so long as they have filed the application by December 30. The deadline has been established so that the Red Cross may use any unclaimed gifts to provide other 9/11-related services prior to the closing of the September 11 Recovery Program in 2007.
