September 6, 2006

Families of September 11 members are invited to participate in a “Hill Drop”, part of the launch of our public awareness initiative on Wednesday, September 13.

The event marks the unveiling of efforts by Families of September 11, in collaboration with Nuclear Threat Initiative (NTI), a nonpartisan nonprofit organization co-chaired by former Senator Sam Nunn and Ted Turner, to bring attention to legislators and the public at large regarding the urgent need to accelerate work to lock down nuclear weapon materials before terrorists can steal them.

The project is titled “Turning the D to an A”, reflecting the “D” grade that the government received from the 9/11 Commission for its efforts to secure nuclear weapon materials.  We want to turn that “D” into an “A”.

FOS11 Board members, Nancy Aronson, Carie Lemack and Elinor Stout, along with members of NTI, will be visiting legislators and their staffs on September 13 and 14, leaving behind the recent Harvard University report titled “Securing the Bomb 2006”.

We need help dropping the reports off in offices on Capitol Hill.

In 1993, Osama bin Laden pledged to take down the Twin Towers.  In 2001, he achieved his goal.  Now he has pledged to kill 4 million Americans with a nuclear weapon.

We can stop him - but we need your support. Your participation in the public launch will contribute to our efforts to make our country safer and more secure.
