July 11, 2005

The Peer Support Initiative Program from the Bereavement & Trauma Center at the North Shore Child & Family Guidance Center (NSCFGC) is for 9/11 survivor and family member adults who:

  • Want to volunteer
  • Who feel that they have come far enough in their journey to give to another
  • Who feel that helping others will help in their own healing
  • Who feel that they have a talent or skill that can be used in the service of others

The training sessions will be held on July 19, 21, 26, and 28 from 6:00 – 8:30 PM at NSCFGC in Roslyn Heights, New York.  You must complete all four sessions.  Each candidate for this training program must meet with the Volunteer Peer Support Coordinator to complete the application and screening.  A thorough background check will be completed before a Peer can provide support services through the program.

This program will train you to speak in the community about the benefits of seeking help, the benefits offered by NSCFGC and in the community, and to learn to co-facilitate bereavement and trauma support groups.  This training will provide a foundation in the areas of grief and trauma, facilitation, communication and listening skills, and group work as it applies to children, adolescents and their families.  This program will allow volunteers to reach out to 9/11 survivors who have been under-served or who have received no services in order to connect them to programs and resources that will help them in their recovery from tragedy and move toward wellness.  This initiative is supported by a September 11 Recovery Grant from the American Red Cross Liberty Fund.
