Families of September 11 would like to extend our heartfelt sympathy to the families and loved ones of those who died this morning in the crash of Flight 3407. We were particularly saddened to learn that one of our members, Beverly Eckert, was a passenger on the plane. Ms. Eckert was a cofounder of the Voices of September 11 organization after the death of her husband in the World Trade Center attacks on September 11, 2001. She was also a member of the Family Steering Committee for the 9/11 Commission. A tireless advocate for disclosure of the truths surrounding the events of September 11th and implementation of the recommendations of the 9/11 Commission vital to our nation’s security, Ms. Eckert most recently was with a group of 9/11 and USS Cole family members who met with President Obama to discuss their concerns about the closure of the Guantanamo Bay detention facility and bringing to justice those responsible for the attacks in Yemen on October 12, 2000 and in New York, Shanksville, and the Pentagon less than a year later.
The Board, staff, and membership of Families of September 11 mourn the loss of a compassionate and tireless advocate who dedicated her life to all those affected by the 9/11 attacks as well as to preventing similar attacks in the future. We extend our deepest sympathy to Ms. Eckert’s family and loved ones as well as to all those who suffered a loss in this tragic event.
