FOS11 Statement Regarding Release of
9/11 Commissioners Report on Recommendations
Families of September 11 (FOS11) is pleased to see the issuance of the former 9/11 Commissioners report card on homeland security. The report clearly outlines, and Hurricane Katrina’s horrific aftermath demonstrated, that our government, local, state and federal, is not yet prepared for the type of disasters, manmade or natural, that are sure to affect our country. There needs to be a measure of accountability regarding preparedness, response, and recovery in any disaster, whether terrorist or natural, as well as the creation of a stronger infrastructure.
We are shocked and dismayed at the lack of progress in transportation security, and call on the Department of Homeland Security to release the National Strategy for Transportation Security, due by law on April 1, 2005, and the National Infrastructure Risk and Vulnerability Assessment, due by law June 15, 2005. Without a strategy or assessment, how can our government best utilize and prioritize the billions of dollars being spent?
FOS11 acknowledges the work that has been done, but recognizes the urgent need to address outstanding pressing and vital issues, including:
- Allocation of first-responder funding grants on the basis of risk and vulnerability and not on political pork
- Completion of critical infrastructure assessments on risk and vulnerability
- Reallocation of the broadcast spectrum for use by first responders to communicate
- Use of a coordinate unified command system for emergency response in municipalities nationwide
We call on Congress, the President, and industry to recognize the needs of our nation to protect our homeland and stand prepared. September is National Preparedness Month, and there is no better way to honor that than to put aside politics and profit margins and do what is right to make our country safe and secure.
The security of its people is our government’s top priority. FOS11 strongly supports the work of the former 9/11 Commissioners and their nonprofit, the 9/11 Public Discourse Project, in their effort to make our country more safe and secure.
