The article by Tom Kean and Lee Hamilton in The Washington Post's Outlook section on September 9th 2007 is an unrelenting spotlight on the work left undone by our leaders. Six years after 9/11, Families of September 11 remains committed to the principal that our nation must be made safe and secure. We are grateful to the former Chair and Vice-Chair of the 9/11 Commission for sharing their wisdom on what our leaders can do to get us there.
Recent legislation passed by Congress and signed into law by President Bush made positive steps forward, but more needs to be done. We remain ever-aware of the threat posed by al Qaeda and their affiliates, a threat detailed by the recent National Intelligence Estimate. This threat includes Osama bin Laden's vow to use a nuclear weapon to kill four million Americans, increased hatred for Americans around the globe and a lack of focus on the tough choices we need to make at home.
Families of September 11 will continue to work for implementation of the recommendations of the 9/11 Commissioners. In the six years since the terrible event that inspired our formation, we advocated for the creation of an independent investigation into the attacks, have urged passage by Congress of multiple pieces of legislation to improve our security, and have reminded our leaders there is much that is still to be done. We have come up with innovative programs enabling ordinary citizens to play a role in helping make sure what happened on 9/11 never happens again. We are aware, now more than ever, that our work—and that of all Americans—has, sadly, never been more important.
