Welcome

As 2005 fast comes to an end, we have an opportunity to reflect on the year. For some, the healing process continues, for others the events of 9/11 may still be close. This newsletter provides resources for family members, parents, and survivors to assist you through the holiday season. In addition, there are links to foundations and scholarship programs that you or your loved ones may be eligible for.

FOS11 wishes everyone a peaceful holiday season and new year. We extend a heart-felt thank you for your support and membership. FOS11 looks forward to continuing to serve you in 2006.

In keeping with the season, many people may be looking for last minute gift idea.  A wonderful way to inspire young philanthropists is to support worthwhile causes.  For more information, please go to: Network For Good.

Issues Update

FOS11 in Collaboration with the Nuclear Threat Initiative
FOS11 and the Nuclear Threat Initiative (NTI) have joined in a collaborative effort to launch a national public/awareness campaign. Located in Washington, D.C., the NTI is committed to reducing global threats from nuclear, biological and chemical weapons.  Its co-directors are former Senator Sam Nunn and Ted Turner.

The goal of the NTI awareness campaign is to urge constant pressure by the American public on their respective legislators regarding putting nuclear safety at the top of its list, and to push for appointing a high-level official reporting directly to the President in order to coordinate and accelerate cooperative work around the globe to prevent terrorists from acquiring weapons of mass destruction.

For educational purposes NTI offers—free of charge—a DVD docu-drama on nuclear terrorism titled “Last Best Chance” (contact Caressa Williams at 202/454-7711 for a copy.) Please go to www.nti.org for further information about NTI and join FOS11’s support of this campaign.

Coping Though the Holidays
The season offers us wonderful opportunities to share and enjoy the company of friends and loved ones. Since the holidays are so "family focused" they can also be a reminder of the absence of those we have lost from our lives. These remembrances, coupled with the "normal stress" of the season, can feel overwhelming and at times crippling. While there is no one way to handle this recurring sadness some helpful suggestions for coping through this difficult time can be found at the National Mental Health Association Website. For further information go to: http://www.nmha.org/reassurance/holiday.cfm

9/11 Band: Remember, Honor, Hope
FOS11 proudly presents the 9/11 Band in remembrance, with honor, and in hope of a better future for all our children. FOS11 President MaryEllen Salamone's son, an avid collector of the colorful "cause" bracelets, designed the 9/11 Band so that people would "remember those who died, honor all those who helped around the world, and hope that something like 9/11 never happens again." For a donation of $15.00, you will receive five bracelets. Bracelets are $3.00/each for any quantity thereafter. Read more about the 9/11 Band Story and to download an Order Form.

Understanding and Encouraging Bereaved Young Adults
An article by Paula A. Madrid, Psy.D.
The death of a parent is in itself one of the most painful experiences human beings can endure. In this article, Dr. Paula A. Madrid helps individuals who lost a spouse (and whose children lost a parent) find ways to help their children grieve and move towards healing. The article provides insight into what to do if a young adult refuses to seek help, and lists many valuable web resources for parents. Dr. Madrid is the Director of The Resiliency Program (TRP) at Columbia University's Mailman School of Public Health's National Center for Disaster Preparedness. A New York State licensed clinical psychologist, Dr. Madrid specializes in trauma, resilience, and disaster preparedness.
