Statement on Passage of the Senate’s "America's Security Act"

Today marks an important event. We are pleased that the Senate has passed legislation called the "Improving America's Security Act" which will implement the 9/11 Commission’s recommendations.

Our work began over five years ago, when we campaigned for the creation of an independent Commission to investigate the terrorist attacks.  As 9/11 family members, we exercised our right to participate in the legislative process, communicating with our elected officials.  Our ultimate goal was to make our country safer without compromising the fundamental rights of Americans.

As the House and Senate bills converge in conference and head toward the President's desk, we will  direct our efforts toward ensuring the final legislation adheres to the  recommendations outlined in the 9/11 Commission's landmark report. We will continue to work with Republicans, Democrats and members of the 9/11 Commission toward this goal.

Today, our hearts are lighter as another milestone is reached, another obstacle overcome.   We thank all the lawmakers and staff who worked tirelessly on this legislation.  We are another step closer to the day when we, as 9/11 families, can rest, knowing that our country is safer, hopeful that no other American family will ever have to walk in our shoes. We look forward to the day when we can say, "Our work here in Washington is done."
