9/11 Online Community Support Group:
Finding Comfort in the Words and Images of Others
When we are in need of comfort the well meaning efforts of the people in our lives may not be enough. Sometimes there are strangers who emerge from bookshelves, art galleries and the stage who seem to say exactly what we feel. Music and lyrics that move us, an artist's palate that soothes, the verses of a poem that speak out loud to the rhythm and resonance of our pain and the stories of authors who have experienced the same traumas as we have. These poets, writers, authors, and artists can offer a salve that promotes healing in ways that our friends and family can not. Finding comfort in the words and images of others gives deeper meaning to our own personal experiences. These strangers enter our lives and make a profound impact. Someone else has had a similar experience. Someone else knows exactly how it feels.
At our last chat session several members asked what books, poetry and music others have found helpful. This chat session will provide an opportunity to share and talk about literature, poetry, music, art, drama or anything else in the creative arts that you have found helpful in your own healing. When you register for the chat session, please feel free to send us a link or word file. We will then post these offerings for others.
The online chat will be held tonight Wednesday, July 19th from 8-9PM EST. This online chat session will provide 9/11 victims' families, survivors, first responders, and others affected by the attacks at the Pentagon, the World Trade Center, and Shanksville the opportunity to discuss issues and topics of importance in a safe, supportive environment. As a reminder, all participants must be FOS11 members (please see below on how to register as a member - membership is free). Dr. Donna Gaffney, a licensed mental health professional and noted trauma specialist, will facilitate the chat.
After you login, you will be able to choose an anonymous chat name (which will identify you in the chat room) and a password. Then, you will receive an email with a link to the chat. Tonight, Wednesday, July 19th at 8pm, please click on the link that is emailed to you and enter your chosen chat name and password. As a reminder, all participants must be 18 years of age or older and members of Families of September 11 (FOS11). To register as a FOS11 member, please click on the link at the bottom of this email. If you have any problems or questions, contact firstname.lastname@example.org or 212-575-1878.
